Even wrijven over de kanarie en je hebt prijs in 2008. Aan de zijkant van de kiosk op de Markt in Sittard hangt de legende van de kanarie. In 1677 toen de Franse troepen van de Lodewijk XIV Sittard wilden afbranden ging abt Hieronymus Ruessens van de Dominicanen naar de Franse generaal De Melac. De kanarie van de abt floot een bekend Frans deuntje waarop de generaal vroeg of hij de kanarie mocht hebben. Hij kon de kanarie krijgen op voorwaarde dat de stad Sittard gespaard zou blijven. U ziet, zo iets kan ook nog in 2008 geschieden.
